Eureka! Discover the Gold in Your Everyday Finances
Published in Paperback by Cupid and Psyche Publishing (30 November, 2000)
Author: Martin Plumb
Average review score:

A Must read if you want to get your finance in control
Martin Plumb did an excellent job in describing the system of multiple accounting. It is an excellent way of starting to control your finances and keep track of your expenses.
Since I read this book I never needed to take an other credit and I paid off all my credit cards. Now I get all the free Credit offers from the different banks, but I will not take them. The system allowed me to be on time with my taxes and plan and stay on the budget.
This is a MUST read for everybody who wants to save money and avoid bank fees. Great job

Helpful AND entertaining!
Martin Plumb has done it! He has taken what would normally be a very dry subject-matter and, with his great story-telling abilities, has turned this into a readable and entertaining book. I would not ordinarily be able to focus my attention on a financial book long enough to finish it, but the interlacing of anecdotes throughout grabs the reader's attention and keeps it until the end. In addition to this, the financial system espoused by Mr. Plumb truly works and is not difficult to understand, especially for those of us who are financially undisciplined or inexperienced in financial world jargon. This book, in short, is entertaining, easy to understand, and the system just plain works!

Evocations of Grace: The Writings of Joseph Sittler on Ecology, Theology, and Ethics
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (September, 2000)
Authors: Joseph Sittler, Steven Bouma-Prediger, Peter W. Bakken, and Martin E. Marty
Average review score:

An underappreciated theologian.
"Evocations of Grace" is a small sampling of Joseph Sittler's writings and thoughts on ecology, theology and ecumenism from 1954-75. Martin E. Marty (University of Chicago) wrote a very personal foreward describing Sittler as a truly gifted "theologian, rhetor, teacher, exemplar". Sittler was a pioneer in terms of speaking out on the environment from a Christian perspective. His description of nature (both organic and works of art, poetry, dance) was the "theatre of God's of grace". He made a landmark speech at the 1961 World Council of Churches on ecumenism. Sittler's writing is interesting and alive because he "insisted that his loose, unsystematic manner of exposition was appropriate to the dynamic and interrelated character of experience, and to the concrete particularity of occasions of grace". "Evocations" is a fantastic introduction to a bit of Sittler's "corpus of work"--how Joe would have loved to play with THAT phrase!

An unknown, underappreciated pioneer
Evocations of Grace is a compilation of some of the writings and musings of American Lutheran Joseph Sittler. This corpus of work spans from 1954 to 1975. Martin E. Marty gives a very personal glimpse of Sittler who attracted small groups of students who listened for any tidbit they could glean as he walked through Chicago's Hyde Park. Sittler wrote and spoke on the environment in the '50's. He influenced Teilhard de Chardin's work on the "cosmic Christ". In 1961 he made a landmark speech on ecumenism at the WCC meeting in New Delhi. Sittler's incarnational view of nature as "God's theatre of grace" shaped much of his theology on "creation-as-grace". Sittler is an interesting theologian to read because of his style of using poetry and literature (which he considered to be part of nature, along with art, dance, etc...) in his "loose, unsystematic manner of exposition". "Evocations" is a fine introduction to a theologian who will hopefully, one day, be recognized for the pioneering theologian he was.

Exiting Bohemia: A True Story of Love, Lust and Loss
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (May, 2003)
Author: Thomas Martin
Average review score:

Very Emotionally Wrenching,
I was given this book by a friend who knew I'd had a tough time in my divorce. Reading Exiting Bohemia took me back to that time and let me know that it is possible to survive anything, even though sometimes it feels you can't. I think this is the first book that accuratly tells the man's side of divorce and shows that women aren't the only ones who grieve. I recommend this book to any divorced woman who is curious about the other half of the story.

A MUST READ BOOK
The best and most honset true story I have ever read. This book totally exceeded all of my expectations. The author is both the Hero and the Villian, but you are still pulling for him at every turn of the page. A very emotional ride that leaves you thinking about your own life, and the decisions you yourself have made over the course of your life and how they affected other people.

I can't wait until the Author's release of his next book. I'll be first in line to buy a copy.

Explorations in Macroeconomics
Published in Paperback by Cat Pub Co (April, 1996)
Authors: James F. Willis, Martin L. Primack, and Jorge Salazar
Average review score:

Wonderful Text, Brilliant Writing
I needed a text to teach an economics class with and searched for weeks with little satisfaction. Then I ran across this under utilized text. The writing is "brilliant" and the authors, especially Mr. Myers seem to have a very firm and realistic grasp of the essential concepts of "Economics"

Outstanding Economics Narrative
This is an outstanding economics textbook. Can be used as a quick primer on what the basics of the field are all about. I believe that the author of this book is a truly remarkable and extraordinary individual and everyone should listen to him closely.

Faces Pressed Against The Glass: Black Folks Caught Between Chaos and the Cosmos (6 cassette Tapes)
Published in Audio Cassette by Dogon Publishing (05 January, 1998)
Authors: Kimberly Thompson, Paul Thompson, Peter Whitham, and Reginald Martin
Average review score:

Faces represents extraordinary insight into complex issues.
Paul Thompson touches sensitive issues in black and white with "Faces." The African American expereince in America is still being defined. This effort embodies the sincere reflections and insight of an African American looking backwards and forward at the same time. I think it is exceptional and the audio tapes make it convienent. Dr. Bill Adkins, Senior Pastor Greater Imani Church Memphis, Tennessee

Paul Thompson gives an unfiltered view of African-Americans.
Insightful, new angles and completely honest and unfiltered views of the current status of African-Americans, Paul Thompson's Faces Pressed Against the Glass is the first book in 30 years that gives views of African-American culture in terms not chosen by the media or the majority culture. I particularly appreciated Thompson's unique phrasing and his willingness to tackle black subjects that media-chosen black writers are frightened of. A great set of tapes that I hope will soon be in book form on all shelves.

Fashion and Surrealism
Published in Paperback by Rizzoli (September, 1989)
Author: Richard Martin
Average review score:

For those that enjoyed this book...
You can look forward to the publication of "In a Surreal Fashion: The Creative Collaboration between Schiaparelli and Dali" by Robyn Gibson in January 2003 (Berg Publishers). I know I am!

Brilliant!
This book explores the relationship between fashion and the surrealism art movement. It includes gorgeous photos and interesting text. I was especially interested in the section of Dali's works and Schiaparelli's designs, showing how the two influenced one another. Fashion can be and should be fun, and this lovely coffee table book demonstrates how this can be achieved. Truly a beautiful work.

Fellowship of Reason: A Moral Community for the 21st Century
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (June, 2001)
Authors: Martin L., III Cowen and Martin L. Cowen III
Average review score:

Solid, life enhancing advice good for any century!
I don't ordinarily like self-help books: this one is different.
Most self-help books amount to little more than a simple series of thematically related formulas designed to address such human problems as how to get more confidence, how to find a better job, how to marry the right person, how to bring up successful children...Cowen offers advice in these areas and more, but the main focus of his work is to reach, for the reader, the often unvoiced philosophical angst that hovers behind the seeming inability to put it all together and then do something about it!

In a clear, well-plotted ten chapters, Cowen divides the psyche into its public and its private spheres. He talks about what it is "to be" and how to develop a public self that is consistent with the private self. He suggests exercises to discover the authentic self and more exercises to help the authentic self emerge.

The theme of the book is to 1)know who you are and 2)become who you are. Cowen demonstrates that the willingness to introspect truthfully coupled with the confidence to act on the self's unmistakeable clues about what it yearns to be, leads to a life of fulfilled contentment. In case the reader is already derailed, there are exercises to get back on track by acknowledging previous mistakes and correcting them in order to get " past the past ".

Learn to live "pro" rather than "anti"
This book is an eye-opener. It's okay to want the affirming aspects of "church culture" by consciously celebrating the good things about life from a rational point of view. The Fellowship of Reason will inspire you to live a "pro" life; i.e. pro-happiness, pro-success, pro-friends, pro-excellence; and to drop the "anti" obsession that taints so many atheist groups; i.e. anti-God, anti-religion, anti-believer. The Fellowship of Reason doesn't have time to be "anti".

The Fight for the 'Malvinas': The Argentine Forces in the Falklands War
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (March, 1992)
Author: Martin Middlebrook
Average review score:

A Rare and Valuable Glimpse Into the Argentine Perspective
Prior to the publication of this book there were important gaps and inaccuracies in our understanding of the battles for the Falkland Islands. Did Argentinian troops intentionally fire upon a British officer attempting negotiation under a white flag at Goose Green? Were Royal Marines successful in their ambush of Argentinian armored vehicles during the initial invasion? Was the Argentinian Air Force commanded by a fanatical maniac out to establish his service as the dominant domestic political force? The surprising answer to all these question is No, and in a careful and touchingly human review of the activities and decisions of Argentinian forces Middlebrook reveals the tragic gap that developed between Argentinian political leaders and the troops and officers given the difficult task of defending the islands without adequate support as winter closed in. The junta's colossal mistake of assuming the UK would not fight for the Falklands led to the isolation, suffering, and defeat of the occupation forces and, while ultimately setting the stage for democracy in Argentina, seared a painful wound into the soul of a country already carrying conscious of past failures. Middlebrook's access to Argentinian commanders, troops, and families helps reveal the complex social and political landscape of a country which still sees the "Malvinas" in terms of classical European colonialism. It also reveals the operational planning and situational understanding of air and land commanders at critical points in the conflict. Students of this subject will recognize the author as a highly accomplished battle historian.

Excellent and Interesting Account
Martin Middlebrook has once again shown why he is one of the best British authors covering military history. His masterful account of the Falklands, 'Operation Corporate' now has a companion volume, this time covering the war from the Argentinian point of view. The book is well told and is a delight to read and only one of very few covering this war from the 'other side'. You really have to give it to the pilots flying their aircraft against the Britsh Fleet, they had guts, they knew what they were in for but continued with their mission. This is a great story, if you can get a copy do so, you wont be disappointed!

Fighting Back: A Memoir of Jewish Resistance in World War II
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (October, 1992)
Authors: Harold D. Werner, Mark Werner, and Martin Gilbert
Average review score:

A valuable telling of history.
Thanks to Harold Werner for retelling these events from his deathbed. I read the book in an evening and could not put it down. I am very proud to know that people such as Mr. Werner fought back no matter what the odds. Not only does he write about battles and suffering, but he also writes of the community he grew up with, the people he loved, how people made their living, and how they related to their neighbors.

Gripping story of Jewish resistance to Nazi persecution
This true story takes place in Poland during the late 1930s thru 1946.The main character is a young man named Harold. The trials he experiences prior to WW2 are nothing compaired to the radical changes his life undergoes during the Nazi occupation. There were several things that I enjoyed most about this book.It is scary to realise how treacherous people can be to each other but it is encouraging to see how the human spirit rises to such adverse circumstances. You will follow his life from living in the city to hiding in the forests of Poland while being hunted by villagers and Nazis.Fear and hunger were common among this group of partsians.I found this story easy to read and relate to. This story can parallel any group of people who are oppressed.
